Titles won : Grasim Mr. India First Runner-up
Savio Bruto de Costa, the first runner-up at Grasim Mr India
contest is a proud Niftian. Originally from Goa, he is currently
undergoing the certificate course fashion design and clothing
technology from NIFT, Mumbai.
Savio was so discreet that the college knew about it only after the
contest was telecast on TV. Having a Mr India does cause a lot of
excitement on campus especially since a couple of months ago another
Niftian (from Bangalore), Kiran, had won the Ford supermodel contest!
Savio is a
pianist-painter-designer-aspiring- model. "All this has been a part of
my life and upbringing in a creatively inclined Goan family," says
this 24-year-old. "I've been designing clothes for my relatives and
friends ever since I was a child.
He took to fashion designing, with a stint with noted fashion
designer Wendell Rodricks. As I was growing up, designing clothes grew
into a kind of a part-time profession and I entered this contest only
at the insistence of a few friends. Never once did I think that I
could win, too."
Tease him about his good looks and
Savio breaks into an embarrassed smile. "It’s a gift," he
acknowledges, which also won him the ‘Model Of The Year’ title at a
local fashion contest in Goa years ago
Savio dresses to suit the occasion, with a wardrobe
defined by a palette of blacks, whites and blues, with black being a
hot favourite for evening wear. "My belt and shoes have to complement
the ensemble. I also consider whether I’ll be dancing or not." Says
this one –time dance teacher who loves to shake a leg when time
permits.
Ask him where he wants to hit it big
and he appears somewhat confused. "I don't know yet," he mumbles
uncertainly. "I won't give up designing. At the same time, though,
I'll be scouting around for a few modelling assignments in Mumbai."
Future Plans
Savio would like to open his own fashion store in
his native city. Drawn to dressing since toddler, style to Savio
translates into elegance. "A garment should shout ‘different’, yet be
comfortable and wearable. Many people mistake style as being one-up on
the latest trends. I think it’s knowing what to wear, how and where
that is most important." Well, the mantra seems to work fine for him. |
