Manipur

 

Manipur, state in northeastern India, bordered on the east by Myanmar, on the north by Nagaland state, on the west by Assam state, and on the south by Mizoram state. One of the smallest of India's states.The capital is Imphal.

Manipur's history prior to 1762, when a local raja (prince) Bhagyachandra requested British aid in repelling a Burmese invasion. The request was made again in 1824. Years of political turmoil followed, caused by disputed successions among local rulers.

Agriculture, which provides the livelihood for 70 percent of Manipuris, and forestry dominate the economy. Rice is the principal crop; maize (corn), sugarcane, pulses.

Major industrial town is imphal.

Area 8,621 square miles (22,327 square km). Population: (1991) 1,826,714.
